Because caddy doesn’t need a mid-engined sports car. It needs luxury cars that are on par or exceed their european rivals, and at the moment, they do not have that. They are 90% of the way there, though. But that last 10% is critical. They need to deal with that first and get it right before moving on to dedicated sports cars. Having a low-volume, super-low margin supercar is far less important than stealing even 10% of the E class’s marketshare, or even bumping one of the europeans out of the top three in the us in at least one market segment. That would be huge for caddy.
GMs mid-engine car doesn’t need to be a caddy just because it’s going to be expensive, anymore than Ford’s GT needed to be a Lincoln.

Lots of companies that don’t need mid-engined sports cars build mid-engined sports cars. See: Ford, Acura. But if it brings people into the Cadillac dealership, it’s worth it.

If I was President, I would tweet on stuff like this. “GM wants to make mid-engine Vette. Liked it better first time when it was called...Corvette! #FAKENEWS #FMLayout #frontmidengine”

Calling that thing a Corvette would be a surefire way to fuck with brand identity. But I guess GM’s not above screwing around with stuff like that, are they? (See Lumina car & Lumina van, for example)
As for me, I don’t accept a rear/mid engine “Corvette” any more than I do a FWD “Impala”. By all means, GM, go ahead and build the car. Just don’t get another name twisted.

I can forgive Lumina. Not like it had a ton of heritage attached to it or anything.
I don’t care if they make this... actually I love it... but it’s not a Corvette. Never will be.

All we can say for certain is that the name Cadillac will throw on the back will suck. CT-9F or something like that. Corvette is a type of warship. Lets run with that theme. Maybe it should be called the Cadillac Destroyer! Or Dreadnaught? Battlecruiser should have been the name for the CTS-V wagon.

A Corvette based Cadillac you say?

Excuse me?
They absolutely need one. It’s important to have a halo besides the Escalade to show off to people new to the brand. It worked for Audi and it can work for Cadillac. Lincoln doesn’t need a sports car because it isn’t a sport luxury brand like Cadillac, and Ford has the GT40 racing history, not Lincoln. Remember that Cadillac wants to be taken seriously against these guys.

Ford and Acura’s lineup volume save for a couple of examples haven’t totally collapsed. Caddy’s has. The GT only made sense to make after Ford finished rebuilding the rest of their lineup and they found traction in the market and garnered critical acclaim. What credibility does a Cadillac supercar have in a world full of consumers who don’t see how they can even compete against the 5er and the E?

They absolutely DO NOT need one.
Wanna know why the Cein did not get built? Who’s going to buy a six figure sports car from the same company that makes the DTS? GM couldn’t answer that question any better than you can, so the multi-billion dollar bespoke halo sports car project that would no matter what break even at best did not get the green light for caddy.
Here we are in the future, where caddys today are far superior to the DTS. But plot twist; the germans always were and then some, which means consumers here don’t have to settle. Coming to the table with 90% may as well be 0%. That is where we are today, because the ATS is not selling, the CTS is not selling, and the previously good XTS has completely collapsed. The only thing that sells well for caddy right now is the XT5. 3/5ths of their lineup is basically dead. Soaking billions into a neat but totally irrelevant halo project is NOT going to fix this problem. Caddy may have to rebuild the lineup again, and that is a multi-decade, multi-billion dollar commitment that will leave them precious few resources for a supercar.
Also, a word on halo cars; their purpose is not for ‘attracting people to the brand’. Your bread and butter products have to handle their own on that. If people think your sedans are terrible, a mid-engined supercar will not change sedan buyer’s minds. No. A halo product is a showcase for the best of what the brand has to offer. But before you can make a try for ‘the best’, you have to get ‘good’ down pat first. Judging by the currently terrible reception caddys sedans are getting, they have yet to do that, unlike Audi, unlike Ford and unlike Acura.

The Cien didn’t get built because Cadillac doesn’t build any of its concept cars. People were begging them to build it, and the Sixteen, and the Elmiraj, and the Escala....
Cadillac’s low sales are a good reason to build a halo car. Because objectively, their sedans are competitive with the Germans. They’re better in some ways and worse than others, but they are worth looking at. Many people today just aren’t looking. A supercar would make people talk about Cadillac, and the rest of their line would benefit. Remember 2004, when Ford built the GT? They also built these.
When Audi introduced the R8, they were just an unreliable German car struggling to build a reputation and move upmarket. Same as Cadillac.
